Sony’s recent unveiling of the PlayStation 5 Pro has sparked significant backlash among the gaming community due to its steep pricing. Marketed by Sony as its “most advanced and innovative console hardware to date,” the PS5 Pro is set to retail at $699.99 in the US, £699.99 in the UK, €799.99 in Europe, and ¥119,980 in Japan.
While the new console offers impressive features, including a 2TB SSD, a DualSense wireless controller, and a copy of “Astro’s Playroom,” many consumers feel the cost is excessive, especially in the UK, where the price appears disproportionately high. Social media platforms, particularly X (formerly known as Twitter), have been flooded with complaints and disbelief over the pricing.
British buyers, in particular, have expressed their frustration, with one user commenting, “Of course the Brits have to pay more for it too,” and another calling the price “insane.” Some users were so shocked that they questioned whether the announcement was genuine, with one remarking, “THE $700 PS5 PRO PRICE WAS REAL.”
Sony has yet to address the criticism directly, but a blog post on the official PlayStation website outlines the PS5 Pro’s numerous enhancements. Designed with “deeply engaged players and game creators” in mind, the PS5 Pro promises higher-quality graphics and smoother frame rates of 60FPS.
The PS5 Pro boasts an upgraded GPU with 67% more Compute Units than the standard PS5, 28% faster memory, and enhanced ray tracing capabilities for improved visual effects. Additionally, the console introduces “PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution,” an AI-based upscaling technology for sharper image clarity.
Alongside the hardware upgrades, Sony has announced that many popular games will receive free software updates to utilize the PS5 Pro’s enhanced features. Games like “Alan Wake 2,” “Assassin’s Creed: Shadows,” “Demon’s Souls,” and “Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth” will carry the “PS5 Pro Enhanced” label.
The PlayStation 5 Pro is scheduled for release on November 7, with pre-orders starting on September 26. As debate continues over whether the new features justify the high price, Sony is positioning the PS5 Pro as a critical leap forward in gaming technology.
