A big Surrey sinkhole in Godstone High Street has been developing rapidly, swallowing more of the road and pushing police to declare a major emergency. The initial Surrey sinkhole formed late on Monday night, and by Tuesday lunchtime, it had grown to at least 65 feet (20 meters) in length.
Now a second opening has opened, with a car perilously near the brink. Safety issues have been raised since the owner of the vehicle has been unable to move it.
Why Have Families Been Evacuated?
Fears of a possible explosion brought on by exposed subterranean cables have driven locals to flee. One of the refugees, Noosh Miri, described the dramatic incident outside her home: “We got a violent knocking on the door. The Surrey sinkhole was just in front of my door, so opening it sounded like I was in a waterfall. The police officer advised us to leave immediately in straight line. We got the children ready in ten minutes and grabbed anything we could find.”
Thanks to their insurance, Miri and her family have temporary housing; but, she anticipates being displaced for “a good couple of months” before being able to go back home.
Why Would the sinkhole develop?
The cause of the Surrey sinkhole remains uncertain, although specialists have put up numerous probable possibilities. While some locals blame heavily loaded automobiles that often pass Godstone High Street, others have connected the tragedy to previous mining cavernues in the region.
Pete Burgess of the Wealden Cave and Mines Society verified that a quarry designated as a “sand pit” shows up on maps from the 19th century exactly under the sinkhole. He clarified that the earth might have been unstable since sand from this quarry was taken for use in gardens and construction.
Regional geologist Andrew Farrant of the British Geological Survey (BGS) thinks a burst water main may have caused the fall-off. He said that although the village is typically stable, weak sandstone underlies it and could be washed away by an unexpected water flow, resulting in an underground void that finally causes the surface to collapse.
“We suspect that a burst water main could have flushed out the weak sandstone bedrock, creating a void and leading to the collapse,” Farrant said.
Locals have raised worries about the surrounding sand quarry and prior mining activities. The BGS has not ruled out the possibility that unmapped sand mines exist or that a collapsed cave roof caused the water pipe to fail, so triggering the Surrey sinkhole even while the old sand mine has been filled in.
How Affected are Residents and Businesses?
With multiple companies forced to close, the Surrey sinkhole has seriously affected the nearby community. One of the few still running companies, Godstone Pharmacy, has been suffering as a result of road closures. Staff have been making deliveries on foot to ensure vulnerable customers receive their prescription.
Pharmacy employee Mrulal Gudadhe remarked, “The pharmacy is totally dead. People are not present. Nothing is open; the streets are vacant. Still, we are transparent and we are still in progress.”
A lack of alternative accommodation led some of the evacuated early Tuesday morning residents to sleep in their cars in a neighboring car park.
What Actions Are Authorities Taking?
Surrey Local Resilience Forum is now leading the crisis management effort; Surrey County Council (SCC) is supervising the reaction. Ongoing investigations guarantee the area’s safety and help to fix broken utilities.
Assistant director for safer communities Carl Bussey of SCC said: ” Residents from within the cordon – around 30 properties – are being supported by Tandridge District Council with advice around accommodation.”
He informed the public that the wider area’s properties still have access to power and water. Permanent repairs will only begin after the site is judged safe for workers.
How long will repairs take?
Ses Although the firm has cautioned that water could seem discoloured, water has restored water supply to impacted properties. Health is not at risk, though, and consumers will be reimbursed on their bills.
Completing repairs is estimated to take several months. Local MP Claire Coutinho thanked engineers working on the site and reassured homeowners that her staff would keep in “regular contact” with Tandridge Council and Surrey County Council to provide ongoing support for those impacted.
According to the Environment Agency, the Surrey sinkhole does not evidence any pollution. Authorities are working to stabilize the area and bring normalcy back to the impacted population, thus investigations into the fundamental causes of the collapse are still under progress.
