Crocodile Tears at Nova festival Site Memorial: What About the 41,000 Palestinians?

Hundreds of Israelis gathered at the Nova festival site to mourn the 364 killed in last year’s Oct 7 attack by Hamas. The ceremony, filled with sorrow and tears, painted a picture of a grieving nation. However, as they shed tears for their own, there’s no mention of the 41,000 Palestinians killed by Israeli military actions, many of whom were innocent civilians, including children. The cries of their families echo in Gaza, where relentless airstrikes and military incursions continue to claim lives.

At the sunrise ceremony, relatives of the Israeli victims expressed their anguish. “Where were you on Oct 7?” cried Mosses Journo, whose niece was among the victims. Yet, this grief pales in comparison to the devastation felt by thousands of Palestinian families who have lost loved ones due to Israeli actions.

The festival site’s memorial, with portraits of the 364 Israelis, may tug at the heartstrings, but it seems hollow without acknowledging the far greater loss of Palestinian life. As the Israeli President Isaac Herzog moved through the crowd, comforting those who lost loved ones, the injustice of mourning only one side of the conflict is laid bare. Where is the commemoration for the thousands of Palestinian children, whose lives were cut short? Real healing demands recognition of all human suffering, not just selective grief.
