Following a reported hit-and-run incident in which a horse had to be put down and an eight-year-old boy was gravely hurt, a 61-year-old man from Bolventor, Launceston, has been charged with several driving offenses. Local officials have paid close notice to the crash on Sunday afternoon in the little community of Altarnun near Launceston.
Christopher Rogers, 61, has been charged with failing to stop after a traffic accident, driving without insurance, driving while banned, driving without due care, and criminal damage. After his detention, Rogers was freed on bail and is expected to appear at Bodmin Magistrates’ Court on February 7, 2025.
What took place in the aftermath of the hit-and-run collision?
A white Ford Transit van was said to have been involved in a hit-and-run collision with a horse in Higher Treween, Altarnun, on Sunday at approximately 2:20 pm, according to Devon and Cornwall Police. The eight-year-old girl who was riding the horse was said to have suffered severe injuries. The toddler was evacuated to a neighboring hospital after emergency personnel were promptly sent to the scene.
Thankfully, a 12-year-old child leading the horse was unharmed during the event. Unfortunately, a group of vets at the site had to put down the horse after it was hurt in the collision. According to a police official, “the horse could not be saved due to the severity of its injuries.”
“While initially thought to have sustained serious injuries, we are pleased to report that the child has since been discharged from the hospital after doctors assessed her condition and determined that her injuries were not as severe as initially feared,” the police later said in their update on the eight-year-old girl.

Devon and Cornwall Police have appealed for information from the public as they continue their investigation into the hit-and-run incident. Anyone with dashcam footage or who may have seen the collision is encouraged to come forward by the force. A representative for the police said, “We are keen to hear from anyone who may have seen the incident or has any footage that could assist our investigation.”
Police want anyone with information to call 101 and reference log 410 from January 12, 2025, or use their website. The police also said that they are trying to piece together what happened at the hit-and-run and that anyone who knows anything about it should come forward.
