Trump Names Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy as Heads of New Department of Government Efficiency

Washington, D.C. — President-Elect Donald Trump has appointed tech billionaire Elon Musk and former GOP presidential hopeful Vivek Ramaswamy to lead a newly formed Department of Government Efficiency. The department, dubbed “DOGE,” aims to streamline federal operations, cut excessive regulations, and drive large-scale government reform.

In a statement shared on social media, Trump expressed his confidence in the pair, describing Musk as “the Great Elon Musk” and Ramaswamy as an “American Patriot.” He added that the department’s acronym, DOGE, is a nod to the popular internet meme and cryptocurrency, Dogecoin, associated with Musk’s online persona. “I am pleased to announce that Musk and Ramaswamy will spearhead our efforts to dismantle government bureaucracy,” Trump wrote.

Ambitious Reform Plans Echo Past GOP Goals

Trump outlined the new department’s objectives, likening it to the Manhattan Project, which developed nuclear weapons during World War II. He stated that the Department of Government Efficiency will work closely with the White House and the Office of Management & Budget to deliver “a smaller government with more efficiency.” He added, “This is the kind of structural reform that Republican leaders have dreamed about for decades.”

The new department’s mission includes slashing wasteful spending and restructuring federal agencies, part of Trump’s broader “Save America” movement. The President-Elect set a deadline of July 4, 2026, for the completion of the department’s goals, framing it as a symbolic gift to the nation on the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

Musk and Ramaswamy React on Social Media

Both Musk and Ramaswamy, who endorsed Trump throughout his 2024 campaign, expressed their excitement on social media. Musk tweeted, “Threat to democracy? Nope, threat to BUREAUCRACY!!!” along with fire emojis, while Ramaswamy shared, “We will not go gently,” tagging Musk in his post.

Their appointments have garnered mixed reactions, with supporters praising the move as a bold step toward government reform, while critics have raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest and the effectiveness of an external, private-sector approach to federal management.

Trump’s Vision for a 'Golden Age'

The announcement follows Trump’s victory in the 2024 presidential election, where he secured 312 electoral votes, winning all seven key swing states. In his election night address in West Palm Beach, Florida, Trump reiterated his commitment to delivering a “strong, safe, and prosperous America.” He declared, “This will truly be the golden age for America,” promising his supporters that his administration will fight for their interests every day.

As the transition to the new administration begins, the formation of the Department of Government Efficiency marks a significant shift in Trump’s approach to federal governance. With Musk and Ramaswamy at the helm, the next two years will reveal whether this unorthodox strategy can achieve its ambitious targets and fulfill Trump’s vision of a leaner, more efficient government.
