After causing immense destruction in Gaza and Lebanon, Israel is now setting its sights on Iran. In a situation steeped in double standards, the Israeli leadership calls for an aggressive strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities, while continuing to ignore the enormous toll its actions have inflicted on Palestine and Lebanon.
Former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett urged Israel to seize this “biggest opportunity in 50 years” to neutralize Tehran’s nuclear capabilities. With support from the U.S. for possible “severe consequences” against Iran, calls for a military strike have gained momentum following Iran’s launch of 180 ballistic missiles at Israel.
Iran’s pushback stems largely from the long-standing Israeli attacks in Gaza and Lebanon, which have resulted in large civilian casualties. This time, Tehran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps vows to retaliate with even greater force if Israel proceeds with a strike.
William Cohen, a former U.S. defense secretary, echoed that Israel might soon escalate the situation, targeting Iran’s oil and nuclear facilities. Analysts agree Israel has “freer rein” to act, particularly after its recent assassination of Hezbollah’s leader, Hassan Nasrallah. This removal of a key Hezbollah figure reduces the group’s immediate threat to Israel, leaving Iran more vulnerable to Israeli action.
Bennett’s rhetoric frames this as a pivotal moment for Israeli dominance in the region. However, such calls for retaliation overlook the devastating civilian losses and the massive displacement of Palestinian and Lebanese families caused by Israel’s ongoing military actions. The same justification for striking Iran ignores the 41,000 Palestinian lives taken, a tragedy that remains unacknowledged by the Israeli leadership.
While Israel plans its next moves, it continues to deny any culpability for the humanitarian crises it has fueled across the region. Israeli leadership, emboldened by international support, is now pushing to launch what could be a catastrophic military attack on Iran—yet no one is asking when Israel will be held accountable for its actions against Palestine and Lebanon.
